THE GOOD, THE BAD, and THE (not so) UGLY as seen by our own Diana Miller April 15, 2008

THE GOOD

Through an act of kindness by the President of BuyATimeshare.com, a timeshare resale company, I was fortunate enough to be awarded a free vacation to anywhere in the continental United States. This trip included a seven day stay at a timeshare resort of my choice.
My husband and I chose to return to the beautiful state of Arizona. We had previously been to the enchanting city of Scottsdale, and although it was gorgeous, we decided that this year we would leave the glitz and glamour behind—and tough it out in the desert of Sedona. This is a wise choice for those who want to experience magnificent views and the ever-changing colors of the mountains, rocks and skies; absolutely breathtaking! For those with a spiritual mindset, the “vortex” would be taken as a once in a lifetime experience. For those like me who wanted to experience the true beauty and rough terrain of the desert, Sedona is the place to go.
No need to bring your heels or make-up ladies, just a pair of comfortable jeans, good hiking boots, and of course a camera! The limitless excursions and sights are worth the trip to this incredible place. However, to experience Arizona as it truly is, be sure to visit the town of Jerome for the “good old boy” townsfolk, saloons and of course the shopping. You won’t be hard-pressed to find a restaurant in Sedona; your palate can be pleased with restaurants that feature anything from rattlesnakes to filet mignon.
Do not leave without visiting THE GRAND CANYON! I could honestly go on for hours about the magnificent beauty that this one “seven wonders of the world” has to offer. The best authors in the world would not do justice to describe the splendor, ruggedness, and breathtaking view that this giant has to offer!

THE BAD

To keep in line with the rough terrain that we knew we were about to encounter in the desert of Arizona, we decided to stay away from the five-star timeshare resorts, and stay at one that was more simplified, quaint and had easy access to both Phoenix and Scottsdale. We chose “The Sedona Pines Resort.” Upon arrival to the resort, we knew that this was not a destination for those looking for glamour, glitz and a mint on their pillow every evening!
Although the resort was very tiny, and not very sensational, it suited our needs as we did not plan to spend much time in the room anyhow. It was nice waking to the sound of the babbling brook just outside our bedroom window. The groundskeeper was on staff at all times and the maintenance of the resort was well kept.
When we checked in at the front desk we were introduced to the concierge, Peggy. Well equipped with knowledge of the state of Arizona, she pleasantly handed us brochures of places to go, things to see, and of course invited us to a “free excursion” with one little catch….that dreadful little tour of the timeshare resort that was to take place the following day.

THE (Not so) UGLY

Being in sales, I “promised” my husband that we would be in and out of there in half an hour! “NOT SO” (Boy was she good, and not so ugly either)! As all the guests waited for their timeshare sales rep to take them hostage, I kept thinking to myself, how can these people make a living trying to trick all these people into buying a timeshare for the ridiculous prices they were asking. I was soon to find out!
When I heard my name being called, I looked up to see this beautiful, well-dressed woman, who flashed her pearly whites at me and my husband, and I knew from then on, this could be trouble! Actually, this very educated and polished sales representative informed us that the Sedona Pines Resort was actually “sold out!” (Then what were we doing there, great let’s get out now!)
HOWEVER……… (Yup, here we go!) RCI Points would allow us to not only stay at the Sedona Pines Resort, but we could go anywhere in the world, including Australia (which, like a fool, my husband told her is the only international place he would care to go to). As she proceeded to tell us that RCI points would allow us to travel anywhere we wanted to, whenever we wanted to, I told her that although my husband was retired, I still worked and had a daughter that just moved away from home! (Me and my big mouth!)
As she flashed her pearly whites at Steve she mentioned that he and his friends didn’t have to use our points for a full week, they could use their points for a few days and ride their motorcycles and tour Sedona the way it should be seen. (By now, she knew our whole life history, our lifestyle and all of our friends on a first name basis!)

Much to my disappointment, my sales experience did nothing to getting us out of there within half-an-hour. As the clock ticked on toward our three hour hostage situation, I was about to jump out of my skin—boy, was she good at what she did. She had an answer for everything. Because she “really” liked me and Steve (yah right) she was going to give us a deal “as long as we didn’t tell anyone” (!!!) She was going to spin the wheel of fortune and “make it stop on Australia!” Wow, isn’t she nice?! The best part of all was that for a mere $37,990.00 (and a 17.9% finance charge) we could get 89,000 RCI points! Such a deal!—NOT!!! I told her we could not make a snap judgment—she went to speak with her manager and because she “liked” us, we were given a once in a lifetime offer.
She presented a bi-annual usage, a that-day only deal on a Sedona Pines Resort Phase Five, including the 89,000 RCI points at $35,990.00 with 20% down ($7,198.00) and we would save almost two thousand dollars. Thank God she “liked” us. Otherwise we would not have had the chance to:
• Go to Australia
• Pay $964.07 a month to travel once a year.
• Spend three hours locked up with Ann and realized how very special my husband and I are!
Thank God I knew about Vacation Property Resales, ranked #1 in the timeshare resale industry!! I can buy a timeshare or rent a timeshare with no hassle, no pearly whites glistening at me, and costing about 40% of the price that out “dear friend” offered us just because she “liked” us! I would like to say in closing: buyers beware of “The Good, The Bad and the Ugly”—visit buyatimeshare.com instead.
