AAA Travel projects 46.3 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home during the Thanksgiving weekend, the highest volume for the holiday since 2007 and a 4.2 percent increase over 2013. Almost 90 percent of travelers (41.3 million) will celebrate the holiday with a road trip and likely will enjoy the lowest Thanksgiving gas prices in five years. The Thanksgiving holiday travel period is defined as Wednesday, November 26 through Sunday, November 30.

Highlights from 2014 Thanksgiving Travel Forecast:

AAA Travel“This year, more Americans will give thanks for the opportunity to travel to friends and family than any year since 2007,” said Marshall L. Doney, AAA President and Chief Operating Officer. “Americans are more optimistic about the future as improvements in several key economic factors, including employment, GDP and disposable income, are boosting consumer confidence and the desire to travel.”

“Holiday joy has come early this year with Americans likely to pay the lowest Thanksgiving gas prices since 2009. Lower prices are increasing disposable income and enabling families to carve out more money from household budgets for travel this Thanksgiving,” continued Doney.

Impact of gasoline prices on travel plans

The national price of gasoline has fallen below $3.00 per gallon for the first time since Dec. 22, 2010, a welcome gift for travelers as they head into the busy holiday travel season. AAA predicts most U.S. travelers likely will pay the cheapest Thanksgiving gas prices in five years. More than 89 percent (41.3 million) of holiday travelers will drive to their destination, a 4.3 percent increase from 2013.

Travel expenses rise modestly

According to AAA’s Leisure Travel Index, hotel rates for AAA Three Diamond lodgings are expected to increase eight percent from one year ago with travelers spending an average of $154 per night compared to $142 last year. The average hotel rate for AAA Two Diamond hotels has risen nine percent with an average cost of $114 per night.

Weekend daily car rental rates will average $55, 10 percent higher than last year. Airfares will only increase one percent, with an average discounted round-trip rate of $189 across 40 top domestic routes.

Most of travelers’ budgets go toward transportation, food and shopping

Travelers are expected to spend an average of $573 over the course of their holiday travels. Despite lower average gas prices, travelers are allocating 31 percent of their budgets to fuel transportation. Food and beverage and shopping will account for 22 percent and 20 percent of holiday travel budgets, respectively.

Travelers’ spending plans mirror their intended activities this Thanksgiving, with 70 percent of travelers reporting they will enjoy dining during their vacation and 59 percent will go shopping. Eighty-nine percent of travelers plan to spend time with friends and family this Thanksgiving holiday.

ARDA Outlines Lasting Benefits of Timeshare Vacations January 21, 2014

Does one of your top ten moments from 2013 include a memory from vacation—or are you among the many that left vacation days on the table this year? According to an annual study by Expedia®, Americans earn among the fewest vacation days (14) in the world each year, and also leave among the most vacation days unused (4) – despite research that shows the benefits of vacationing. The American Resort Development Association (ARDA) challenges Americans to re-think vacation as a necessity instead of a luxury, and to resolve to take one in the New Year.

ARDA timeshare associationRecent surveys show depressing statistics on American vacations. “We vacation for less time each year, feel guilty about it when we do get away, and often bring technology with us to stay in touch with those we’ve left behind,” said Howard Nusbaum, president and CEO of the American Resort Development Association (ARDA). “Yet there is proof that taking time away to recharge your batteries can make you a better employee, a better spouse, and an all-around happier person.”

Another Expedia® survey found that 79 percent of people who vacation at least three times a year have happy marriages, and 47 percent of people who went away last year like their job. The timeshare industry says look no further than its owners – eight million U.S. households that own a timeshare point to regular vacations as a top reason for owning, in addition to more spacious accommodations.

Owners also say that the honeymoon period following a timeshare vacation lasts longer because the stay was more relaxing, as more space makes for a more relaxing vacation for everyone. No more “lights out” at the kid’s early bedtime, no more sharing pizza on a hotel room bed, and no more “group think” around mealtime.

Perhaps that’s why timeshare occupancy rates (76%) have outpaced traditional hotel stays (56.6%) for the past several years—with timeshare owners nearly twice as likely as non-owners to have vacationed in the past 12 months. *

“We hear from our owners every day about how their lives have changed because of their timeshare ownership,” said Nusbaum. “The combination of the spacious accommodations, luxurious resorts, and the discipline to vacation at least once a year makes for a better way to vacation,” he concluded.

The timeshare industry has long since advocated for regular vacations, and the pre-paid nature of the product demonstrates their commitment to making vacation a priority. The American Resort Development Association (ARDA) recently released the “Timeshare Effect”, an infographic that highlights the link between timeshare vacations and their effect on owners. From lifestyle to finances to family memories, a timeshare vacation creates a lifetime of benefits.

Perhaps it’s time you add a timeshare vacation to your New Year’s bucket list. For information on why timeshare may be a better vacation for you, visit http://www.VacationBetter.org.

AAA Predicts Thanksgiving Travel Slightly Down November 21, 2013

Posted by Steve Luba in : Travel , comments closed

AAA projects 43.4 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, a decrease of 1.5 percent from the 44 million people who traveled last year. This decrease falls just shy of last year’s Thanksgiving travel four-year peak since the recession-driven declines in 2008-2009 when Thanksgiving travel fell by 25 percent. The Thanksgiving holiday travel period is defined as Wednesday, Nov. 27 to Sunday, Dec. 1.

Highlights from this year’s 2013 AAA Thanksgiving Holiday Travel Forecast include:

AAA-logo“While the economy continues to improve, the sluggish pace of the recovery is creating uncertainty in the minds of some consumers and therefore AAA is projecting a slight decline in the number of Thanksgiving travelers this year,” said AAA Chief Operating Officer Marshall L. Doney.  “For those traveling the good news is motorists will receive a holiday bonus in the form of lower gas prices which are at their lowest levels for the holiday since 2010.”

“The primary focus of Thanksgiving, more so than any other holiday, is to gather with friends, family and loved ones and celebrate with each other. Travelers attempting to carve out a travel budget will be happy to know that Thanksgiving will be the least expensive holiday of the year,” continued Doney.

Impact of gasoline prices on travel plans

AAA estimates that most drivers will pay the cheapest gas prices for the Thanksgiving holiday since 2010. The national average is at the cheapest level of the year and should continue to drop in the weeks ahead. Drivers can find stations selling gas for less than $3.00 per gallon in the vast majority of states. The decreased cost of gas will provide consumers with real savings that could be used for other purposes on the trip.

Wednesday before the holiday will be busiest travel day

The Thanksgiving holiday is unique falling on a Thursday every year. Many people are off from work the Friday after; giving travelers more time to spend with family and friends.   AAA asked intended travelers which days they would depart for and return from Thanksgiving travel. Among those surveyed, the highest volumes of travelers plan to leave for their trip the Wednesday before the holiday (37 percent) and return the following Sunday (33 percent) with another 24 percent expecting to return on Monday, Dec 2 or later.

Automobile travel remains dominant mode of transportation, air travel decreases

Approximately 90 percent of travelers or 38.9 million people plan to travel by automobile this Thanksgiving. This is a 1.6 percent decrease over the 39.5 million people who traveled by auto last year.  Air travel is expected to decrease 3.7 percent as 3.14 million holiday travelers will take to the skies.

Those traveling by air will find airfares comparable to last year according to AAA’s Leisure travel Index.  For the Thanksgiving holiday the average lowest round-trip rate is $187 for the top 40 U.S. air routes compared to $188 last year. Approximately 1.4 million travelers will choose other modes of transportation, including rail, bus and cruise ship.

Hotel rates relatively flat, car rental rates increase six percent

According to AAA’s Leisure Travel Index, Thanksgiving holiday hotel rates for AAA Three Diamond lodgings are expected to average $142 per night compared to $143 last year. Travelers planning to stay at AAA Two Diamond hotels can expect to pay an average cost of $105 per night, compared to $104 in 2012.  Weekend daily car rental rates will average $50, compared to $47 last year.

Average travel distance increases

According to the survey of intended travelers, the average distance traveled by Americans during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend is expected to be 601 miles, which is an increase of 2.2 percent from last year when travelers planned to log 588 miles

Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific, part of Wyndham Worldwide, has celebrated the highly anticipated completion of the Phase III development and expansion of Wyndham Resort Denarau Island. The project marks one of the largest tourism developments undertaken in Fiji in recent years.

The celebrations, held last week, were officiated by the Prime Minister of Fiji, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama. Also in attendance were Fiji’s Attorney General Mr Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, Tui Nadi Ratu Sailosi Raimoqedawai, representatives of the Landowning Community, President and Chief Executive Officer of Wyndham Vacation Ownership Mr Franz Hanning, Chief Operations Officer of Wyndham Vacation Ownership, Geoff  Richards and Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific Mr Barry Robinson.

The occasion was celebrated with a night of festivities at the resort including a spectacular fireworks display. To mark the occasion, a commemorative plaque in the design of a traditional Fijian carved wooden mask and clubs was unveiled by Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama. The plaque will be displayed in the resort’s newly renovated reception building.

WorldMark-Resort-Denarau-IslandHosted around the newly refurbished main pool, the event was attended by more than 600 people, including WorldMark South Pacific Club by Wyndham owners, resort guests and dignitaries from the Fijian community, and included speeches by the Prime Minister, Franz Hanning and Barry Robinson.

In addressing the audience, Prime Minister Bainimarama made special mention of Wyndham’s significant contribution to the Nadi community and Fijian economy since the resort was first developed in 2000.

“Today marks a landmark event for Fiji’s tourism industry,” said Prime Minister Bainimarama. “In 2000, Wyndham created one of the world’s premier resort destinations. Today, with the unveiling of this marvelous development, they have taken the overall guest experience to new heights, while attracting generations of visitors to Fiji for decades to come,” he said.

Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama also commended Wyndham’s commitment to sustainability through Wyndham Green, the company’s global environmental program. Many environmentally sustainable features were incorporated into the redevelopment, including the use of local timbers, natural light and cross flow ventilation, energy saving lighting and water saving devices, plus energy efficient cooling systems.

The refurbishment and expansion of the 201 apartment Wyndham Resort Denarau Island (formally the WorldMark Denarau Island Resort) have been extensive. Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific has spent over FJD$50 million (AUD$30 million) in developments at the resort over the last two years including the Phase III development.

Based on design concepts by Australian architects Guymer Bailey, the design, construction, architecture, and fit-out with furniture, fixtures and equipment of the resort redevelopment were undertaken by Fijian firm Architects Pacific under the direction of Pacific Building Solutions with mostly local Fijian consultants, subcontractors and suppliers employed in the redevelopment.

Vacation owners and resort guests will be able to enjoy new accommodation choices of one, two, and three-bedroom deluxe apartments, contemporary in design, incorporating Fijian elements throughout the interiors, plus the three-bedroom ocean view grand suites and three and four-bedroom luxurious presidential villas with private plunge pools overlooking the ocean.

Further enhancements also include an expansive pool area refurbishment with a poolside bar and café, Karma Maravu Adults’ Retreat Pool and Bar; the expansion and redevelopment of the resort reception and lobby and kids’ club, plus the relocation and construction of the new Mamacita Mexican Restaurant. Wyndham Resort Denarau Island is also now home to Fiji’s first Karma Beach Bar – Karma Beach Fiji – a newly constructed restaurant, cafe and bar boasting a white sandy private beach.

Having more than doubled its resort portfolio in just 10 years, Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific’s explosive global growth is showing no signs of slowing down. This week’s achievements further strengthen Wyndham as the leader in the hospitality and vacation ownership industries, offering guests and vacation club owners exceptional levels of service and memorable experiences in exciting destinations around the globe.

“Our commitment to providing first-class accommodation and facilities to WorldMark South Pacific Club by Wyndham owners and guests is reflected in the significant development of this property, one of the first resorts in the Club’s portfolio, which now encompasses 24 resorts throughout the Asia Pacific region,” said Mr. Robinson.

“We are proud to welcome our owners and guests to the best address on the island, offering warm friendly service and brilliant accommodation choices both befitting of the destination and true to the Wyndham legacy,” he said.

Located on picturesque beachfront, Wyndham Resort Denarau Island is situated a short drive from Nadi Town, with easy access to a range of retail and restaurant outlets and a variety of cruises that provide island-hopping tours and other tropical water activities. With friendly, welcoming staff, it is the perfect base to experience Fiji.

New Le Meridien Travel Study Reveals More People Choose Coffee Over Sex For Their Morning Buzz October 6, 2013

Posted by Steve Luba in : General, Travel , comments closed

Le Méridien Hotels & Resorts has revealed the results of a newly commissioned survey on global coffee and travel habits as the Paris-born brand begins to roll-out Master Baristas at its hotels and resorts worldwide by end of year. The Le Méridien survey, conducted in advance of International Coffee Day on September 29, found that coffee surpasses sex as the ideal wake-up call according to more than half (53%) of the global respondents. The study also established that coffee drinkers are addicted to this morning ritual as 54% of respondents make their morning brew right at home and an overwhelming 78% would rather give up alcohol, social media or sex with their spouse for a year rather than forfeit coffee – proving that a bean buzz remains the ultimate high.

Coffee-Lover1The new global study of coffee drinkers and frequent travelers in six countries – from India to the US, China toUAE, among other key markets – uncovers how today’s ‘mega-travelers’ get their caffeine fix. While travel usually provides a break from the daily routine, the survey shows that coffee remains an on-the-go necessity as, on average, people drink more coffee when they are away from home. Coffee traditions and flavors from around the world are so distinct that a majority of seasoned jetsetters (53%) claim to have experienced nostalgia for a destination due to the cup of coffee they enjoyed while traveling.

Spilling the Beans: Coffee Habits Fuel the Day

A ubiquitous necessity and source of energy, the coffee one consumes – and how much – can say a lot.

Something’s Brewing among Global Travelers

When traveling the world, coffee drinkers may experiment with local flavors, but their addiction never wavers. Key findings include:

Coffee Talk: Cups of Joe Create Conversation

With speed of information, convenience and connectivity leading the charge in today’s society, it is no wonder that coffee and social media are closely intertwined.

“Coffee continues to be an increasingly important part of the travel experience, and to develop high impact programming for our Le Méridien guests, it was important that we had an understanding of global coffee trends,” said Brian Povinelli , Global Brand Leader, Le Méridien and Westin. “The new Le Méridien Master Barista program, derived from key findings from our study, will further bring to life a quintessential European café and breakfast culture at Le Méridien hotels and resorts around the world.”

Calling all Baristas: Le Méridien Adds more than 100 Coffee Specialists

To meet the growing demands of coffee lovers worldwide, Le Méridien today launched a new Master Barista initiative that will by end of year introduce a dedicated coffee expert to every hotel globally. Derived from the Italian word for ‘bartender,’ the Le Méridien Master Barista will boast a technical skillset required beyond making basic coffee drinks and undergo an intensive training program, designed by Le Méridien and its global coffee partner illy. Le Méridien Master Baristas will lead coffee-related initiatives and standards at each hotel as well as serve as lead coffee cultural ambassador, maintaining knowledge of current coffee trends while raising the local community’s awareness of coffee. According to the survey, two-fifths of travelers also prefer to get their coffee in the hotel lobby rather than make it in-room, making Le Méridien Hub® — a reinterpretation of the traditional lobby into a coffeehouse environment that stimulates dialogue and exchange — an even more integral gathering place for guests looking to caffeinate and converse.

“As a LM100 member and Master Barista, I am thrilled to further bring coffee culture to life for Le Méridien guests worldwide,” said Storm. “Coffee is an essential part of the cultural and travel landscape, and I believe that the team of Master Baristas at Le Méridien hotels around the world will enhance the awareness and appreciation of various international trends and flavors.”

Driving To Your Timeshare This Labor Day – AAA Says You’ll Have Plenty Of Company On The Roads August 30, 2013

Posted by Steve Luba in : Travel , comments closed

AAA Travel projects 34.1 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home during the upcoming Labor Day holiday, a 4.2 percent increase from the 32.7 million people who traveled last year.  The anticipated increase in holiday travel is predominantly due to increased consumer spending and the improving housing market.  The total number of 2013 Labor Day holiday travelers is expected to reach a new post-recession high. The Labor Day holiday travel period is defined as Thursday, August 29 to Monday, September 2.

AAA-logo“AAA is forecasting a lift in Labor Day travel this year due to the increasingly positive economic outlook and optimism in the housing market,” said AAA President and CEO Robert L. Darbelnet.  “For many Americans, their home is also their biggest asset, as home prices improve in many parts of the country more families are feeling comfortable about traveling this Labor Day holiday.”

Highlights from 2013 AAA Labor Day Holiday Travel Forecast include:

“As schools across the nation usher in their next session of students, the Labor Day holiday provides families with the opportunity for one final extended summer weekend getaway,” continued Darbelnet. “AAA reminds drivers as they head out for the holiday and the school year is beginning that safety should remain top of mind. It is important to remain distraction-free and keep their mind on the task of driving.”

Automobile travel remains dominant mode of transportation

Approximately 29.2 million people (85 percent) plan to drive to their destination, an increase of 4.3 percent from the 28 million who drove last year.

Gas prices are unlikely to be a major factor for people in determining whether they will travel this Labor Day. As of mid-August, prices were on average down 2.7 percent per gallon compared to the same time year. The average price for gas on Labor Day 2012 was $3.83 per gallon, the most expensive average ever on record for the holiday. The current national average price for a gallon of regular gas is $3.54, 18 cents lower than last year.

AAA forecasts gas prices to remain less expensive than last year based on current trends through the middle of August, but there remains the potential for late-summer hurricanes and refinery problems that could send prices higher.

However, gas prices remain at a level most Americans consider too high. Half of U.S. adults consider gas prices to be “too high” when it reaches $3.44 per gallon. Forty-six percent of adults believe gas is too high when it reaches $3.00 per gallon; 61 percent when it reaches $3.50 per gallon; and 90 percent when it reaches $4.00 per gallon.

August 30 busiest travel day as travelers take full advantage of extended weekend

The largest share of travelers (46 percent) on a single day will depart on August 30 and the largest share will return on Monday (43 percent). Eighty-five percent intend to return from their Labor Day trip on Monday, Tuesday, or later.

Air travel to increase slightly

More than 2.61 million leisure travelers (eight percent) will arrive at their destination by air, a slight increase (2.8 percent) from last year’s 2.54 million air travelers.  The remaining seven percent of holiday travelers are expected to travel by other modes, including rail, bus and watercraft.

Average travel distance decreases, spending up slightly

According to the survey of intending travelers, the average distance traveled by Americans during the Labor Day holiday weekend is expected to be 594 miles, which is 32 miles less than last year’s average of 626 miles.

Median spending during the Labor Day holiday weekend is expected to grow to $804, compared to $749 last year.  Travelers expect to spend 24 percent of their budget on transportation and lodging and 21 percent on food and beverages.

During the holiday weekend the most popular activities will be dining (57 percent), visiting with friends/family (46 percent) and shopping (43 percent).

Car rental rates and airfares rise, hotel rates see slight increase for mid-range hotels

According to AAA’s Leisure Travel Index, weekend daily car rental rates will average $51, 32 percent more than last year’s average of $39. Airfares increased four percent year-over-year, with an average lowest round-trip rate of $214 for the top 40 U.S. air routes compared to $205 last year. Hotel rates for AAA Three Diamond lodgings are expected to increase four percent from one year ago with travelers spending an average $161 per night compared to $154 last year. The average hotel rate for AAA Two Diamond hotels are expected to drop two percent with an average cost of $115 per night.

Florida Timeshare Summer Bay Resort Loses Building In Massive Sinkhole August 12, 2013

summer bay resort timeshare collapses in sinkhole

UPDATED 5:30pm, August 12, 2013 – Around 12 AM this morning in Clermont, Florida, Florida timeshare Summer Bay Resort had one of its buildings collapse in a massive sinkhole. No injuries were reported as the residents of Building 104 were awakened to loud bangs and glass breaking. At the time, around 30% of the building had started to collapse.

The  collapse started in the rear of the building when the massive sinkhole, which is now reported to be 100 feet wide in diameter and about two stories deep, opened up and the building started to lean. The surrounding buildings were also evacuated as a precaution, due to power outages and possible gas leaks. All 36 occupants of Building 104 are accounted for, with witnesses claiming that some occupants had to jump out of windows to escape the collapsing building. About 100 people in all were evacuated from the three buildings at the site.

The sinkhole appears to have taken part of Building 103, but Building 105 appears to be in good shape. However, Lake County officials are inspecting the ground underneath the building to assess possible risk before allowing residents to re-enter the building.

“After the geologists’ initial survey here, they’ve indicated it is what they describe as a classic Florida sinkhole about 100 feet in diameter and on a preliminary basis, they do not have a concern that it is growing or will grow,” according to Summer Bay resort president Paul Caldwell in a statement to the Orlando Sentinel.

Guests who were evacuated reportedly had 10 minutes to leave the building, with most leaving behind everything they had brought with them. Now, with belongings such as car keys, clothing and medication mixed within the collapsed structures, officials are determining a plan of recovery.

“I talked to a lady this morning whose keys, medicine, money and Disney tickets were all in building 104 and she in all likelihood will never see it again,” said Caldwell. “We are authorizing cash advances as needed , some have to buy clothes. We are going to do whatever we can to do whatever is right….” We are in the hospitality business and we want to save our guests’ vacation.”

The American Red Cross is on the premises to assist guests affected by the event and will help to find them temporary shelter, along with the management of Summer Bay Resort.
